살아있다!

20살때 MT가서 쓰던 놈 이었는데....

그동안 고향 집 뒤주 속에서10년,

또 10년을 기둥에 매달려 있던 놈 이었다.

아무도 봐 주지 않고 쓸쓸히 붉은 쇠옷으로 덥혀 가던 놈 이었는데....

이제서야 그 가치를 알고 주인과 재회 했다.

23년 전 너를 처음 본거 같구나. 반갑다!

이제부터 그 동안 못다 한 사랑을 해 주꾸마!

 Tilley lamps....한번 점등 해 두면 밤새..아침에 일어나도 불을 밝히고 있던 놈이었다.

막내도 좋아한다. 이 기분 알려나?

 

석유(Kerosene) 가득넣고 시운전 한후.... 무겁냐?

  

처마 밑 기둥에 매달려 갈아 입은 붉은 옷! 사포로 닦는다고 닦은게...이정도..!

Control Cock 또한 잘 작동 된다. 살아있음을 확인한다.(예열 할때 떨어진 파란 고체연료 가루가 있네...)

 

펌프 손잡이도 닦고...펌핑이 안될까 걱정했는데....세월의 풍파에도 끄덕 없다! 부품에 전혀 이상이 없다.

 

Hood 법랑에 붉은 꽃이 피었지만 지장 없다! Vaporiser 또한 잘 작동 된다.

 

지금은  알콜 예열기가 없다! 예전에 있었던 기억이 난다. 쉬운 예열 방법을 잠시 골몰하다......드디어 찾았다!

유리 밑 벌래 방지망(Insect Shield)으로 고체 연료를 얹고 불을 붙혀 예열을 해 보았다. 결과는 대성공!

점등 잘 된다^^^야호~~!

 

제일 심하게 녹이 발생하였으나 사포로 닦아보니 아무 이상 없다!

(이 부분 때문에 그동안 아무도 거들더 보지 않았으리....삭아서 떨어질줄 알았는데...)

 

유일하게 상표가 남아 있는 부분이다.Made in EEC(European Economic Community)로 적혀 있다. 영국에서 만들었겠지...?!

기름통(Container)이 동으로 되어 있다. 녹슬어 구멍 이라도 난 줄 알았는데... 제일 멀정하다!

 

생전 모습을 담았어야 하는데.....! 九死一生 했다!

 

Mantle은 코베아 갤럭시 꺼로 달았다.좀 크다. 모양이 제대로 안나와 불이 좀 약하다. 좀더 연구 해야 겠다.

Mantle위 Bunner 또한 동 재질이어서 아무 문제 없다.

20대 때 등산가서 유리(Globe) 가장자리를 약간 깬 기억이 난다...... 지금도 사용하는데 전혀 지장이 없다.

 

그동안 잊고있던 추억 하나가 당당히 자리를 잡았다! 추억을 품는 것은 골동품을  만지는 거 아닐까...! 이놈이 있어 좋다!

Tilley lamps

For brief power outages candles or battery torches are a quick and convenient means of providing emergency lighting, but if the power is off for more than an hour or two their shortcomings soon become apparent.  one of the biggest drawbacks is that these light sources cannot compete with mains lighting for providing sufficient illumination to read a book, do homework, cook a meal, etc.  For these tasks one requires a brighter lamp, and one of my solutions to this problem is the paraffin Tilley storm lamp.

Tilley lamps have been made for decades and their design is so good that there have been few modifications over the years.  They are still made and can be bought online from the manufacturer’s website, currently priced at between £90 and £100 depending upon choice of colour.  If this is too expensive secondhand models are available at much more reasonable prices on eBay although these will often be missing the instructions (I have reproduced the sections on lighting and extinguishing the lamp below), the clip-on methylated spirit lighting torch (which is essential), and the funnel to fill the tank (which is not essential but makes the job easier).  Spare parts are easily available from the Tilley website. 

 

 

 

 

Lighting the lamp is a two-stage process and is not as quick as lighting a candle or switching on a battery lantern.  However once alight the Tilley gives out a bright, steady light that can illuminate a typical domestic room, and it burns for about 12 hours on a single tank of paraffin (about 1½ pints).  The lamp burns paraffin vapour on a mantle that is protected by a Pyrex glass globe, and therefore the lamp can be used out of doors on a windy night without blowing out.  The first picture above shows a Tilley lamp with the pre-heater meths torch in position and alight.  The meths burns for about two minutes, heating the vaporizer tube.  Then, when the paraffin is turned on the mantle lights and the meths torch is removed.  The second photograph shows a Tilley lamp with the meths torch removed and the mantle glowing normally.

For the benefit of those who have lost the instructions, here is the description of how to light and extinguish the lamp, as described in the sheet that came with my Tilley lamps:

Lighting Instructions
I. Turn off control knob (clockwise).
2. Remove pump and fill, using only clean paraffin (kerosene) and a funnel fitted with a filter, to a level just below the pump opening. Capacity about 1½ pints (0.86 litres).
3. If filling is not required, ensure any pressure is released by loosening the pump. Tighten again. This is important, otherwise the lamp will not light correctly.
4. Fill a small jar, or the bottle provided, with methylated spirits (alcohol). Soak the torch cup by immersing it in the methylated spirits (alcohol) and then clip it to vaporiser below the glass globe. Light the torch. If using an insect shield, press it down away from glass to allow entry of torch cup. At this point the new mantle will ‘Burn off’ and produce a yellow flame from out of the hood.
5. The torch will burn for about two minutes. Before it burns out. turn on the control knob (anti-clockwise) and pressurise slightly by giving eight strokes of the pump. The mantle will light up with a low ‘pop’.
6. After 30 seconds pump firmly until the mantle is fully illuminated. About 90 pumps are normally sufficient for a full container. If the container is not full - 1½ pints (0.86 litres), then more pressure will be required - the less fuel, the more pumps!
NOTE: Periodic pumping is necessary to maintain a bright light. About 40 pumps each hour.
7. Remove torch and when cool replace in methylated (alcohol) bottle.

To extinguish
1. Turn the control knob off (clockwise).
2. Always release the pressure by loosening the pump, tighten again.
NOTE: After burning the lamp for the first time, slightly tighten the gland nut on the control cock by turning it clockwise.

I keep my Tilley lamps filled up and ready to use, together with the glass jars of methylated spirits in which the preheater torch is kept.  It is necessary to keep a small stock of paraffin and meths, and advisable to have one or two spare mantles.  Note that a Tilley lamp can run perfectly well on domestic heating oil as an alternative to paraffin, but under no circumstances should petrol (gasolene) be used.
